Mathilda "Mother" Burling, Leader in the Pilgrimage Movement
Mathilda "Mother" Burling was a recognized leader in the pilgrimage movement. She lobbied Congress all throughout the 1920s for organized pilgrimages to France. Mrs. Burling lost her only son, Private George Burling, in the war. She traveled with Party B, 1930 to decorate his grave in the St. Mihiel American Cemetery.
